Is it ok to mix and match suit pieces?

I am buying some new suits later this week. I am really tired of wearing matching suit ensembles, it feels so stuffy and boring. Is it ok to mix and match? For example - Can a person wear a black suit jacket with gray suit pants and vice versa? What about a chocolate brown suit jacket with gray or khaki suit pants? Would love some feedback!
